Hiking Near Kapolei

Hiking is one of the best ways to experience life on Oahu. Some of the island’s best views can be enjoyed from the many trails that offer something for amateur and advanced hikers alike. Many of Oahu’s best hiking trails are located just minutes from your Kalaeloa rental home in Kapolei.

Manana Trail

Manana Trail is a 4-mile trail near Pearl City, just 15 minutes from Kapolei. On the Manana Trail, you’ll find hikers, runners, and mountain bikers enjoying the weather and the stunning views. The Manana Trail features plenty of shade, although it’s still recommended to bring water and wear sunscreen to beat the island heat. The lower two miles of the trail will take you to a popular camping and picnicking site where you can enjoy a rest or a meal.

Diamond Head Summit Trail

Diamond Head is one of Oahu’s most prominent features. This famous volcanic crater is located on the southeast shore of the island, easily visible from Waikiki. The 1.5-mile Diamond Head Summit Trail is one of the most popular hikes on the island, featuring 360-degree views from the WWII bunkers that still sit atop Diamond Head. This trail is a moderate-difficulty hike because parts of the trail are very steep; however, the Summit Trail is paved for easier access and features a variety of lookouts where you can stop and enjoy the island views. Because this trail is exposed, bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen. Many hikers advise starting out in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail

The Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail covers 2.25 miles and climbs 1,800 feet to the top of the Ko’olau Ridge, which is part of the Ko’olau Mountains visible across the eastern part of the island. This steep hike also makes a for a challenging run, but when taking the trail slowly, it is an enjoyable experience for hikers of all experience levels. Along the way, you’ll find lush island greenery and plenty of opportunities to capture photos of the landscape. There is a picnic area less than a mile from the top where you can pause to enjoy refreshments and catch your breath before making your way to the ridge’s summit to take in the beautiful views.

Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail

If you’re interested in a gently-sloping trail that culminates in a magnificent view, you’ll love the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail. This trail takes hikers along the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline and offers long-distance views of the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i when the weather is clear. Hikers often see migrating whales as these majestic animals pass between Oahu and its neighboring islands. The Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail features a paved trail that is easy to navigate and ends near the Makapu’u Lighthouse, which is one of Oahu’s most famous landmarks. This lighthouse has been standing guard on the island’s shore since 1909. Just past the lighthouse, you’ll be able to see the eastern side of the island, including areas such as Waimanalo Beach and the Koko Crater.
